Portraits: Painting, Face Pulling and Storytelling
“Memory is the key to Allen Sapp’s painting. It is the glue that binds together his subjects, their activities and settings, and it is the key to his method. He paints directly from memory. He doesn’t use photographs or sketches. He doesn’t paint on site or from the figure. This distinguishes him from most artists, and it is radically different than point-and-shoot photographers. Artist work at developing relationships with their subjects in different ways. Aside from being a show of beautiful and interesting pictures, this show explores some of those differences.”(Marcus Miller, Curator)

Flash: Terry Billings February 1 – March 10

An immersive installation using video images, auditory recordings and other media, Flash constructs a space for the active contemplation of nature, beauty and the social sphere. What are the relations between nature and beauty or human and non-human? How do they mark the production and reception of art? Terry Billings is a graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University, the Alberta College of Art and Design and the University of Saskatchewan, Terry Billings explores the interface of public and private knowledge through narrative and spectacle. Fundamental questions around representation and aesthetics dovetail with the hard political realities of urban sprawl and private property in installations that are both contemplative and issue-oriented. She teaches studio courses in the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon and is creative partner working with eight artists in North Battleford. Gallery Reception: Friday, February 11, 2011 at 7 p.m.
Buttons Baking, and the Backyard
Current works from Karlie King, participant in the Creative Partnership Mentorship Program on display in the administration curve of the gallery. This display of hand made clay tiles are impressions of her life. “I am encased in a world of baking and garden tools, of plants (both edible and decorative), and of toys and knick-knacks. My days are spent cooking, baking, gardening, canning, playing with children, all the while trying to continue an artistic practice. On another more metaphorical level, these layers tell of my philosophical worldview and way of life--a life filled with hard work, good food, play, and buttons of time where I can roll out a slab of clay and imprint my life on it.”

Blind Contour Drawings by Brandan Doty and Sarah Jane Holtom
January 5– February 15

This exhibition features a series of drawings by two artists – Sarah Jane Holtom’s drawings of her dog and Brandan Doty’s hockey drawings. Both artists use a drawing technique called blind contour – where the artist does not look at the drawing they are making, or only with quick glances, and instead they keep their eye on what they are drawing. In Sarah’s case her pencil crayon drawings of her aging dog nestled amongst pillows and carpets is handled in a delicate, beautiful light touch. Brandan drew the hockey drawings by watching a hockey game on television and keeping his eye on the puck and following its movement with a pencil or oil stick on a piece of paper on his lap. Both of these artists use the simplest of materials and the blind contour technique to make drawings that are conceptual. This exhibition is curated by Heather Smith, Moose Jaw Art Gallery and Museum sponsored by the Battleford Allied Arts Council and touring through the Organization of Allied Arts Councils.
