David Garneau: Road Kill
Featuring the work of Saskatchewan Metis artist David Garneau, Road Kill is an exhibition of acrylic and oil paintings and drawings of birds and deer killed on prairie highways by automobiles along the old Carlton Trail. These paintings encourage the viewer to reflect on mortality, including their own. They are in the memento mori (remembrance of death) still life art tradition, often symbols for the fragility of life. Road Kill plays with and goes against this tradition – these paintings are both stilled lives and landscape. These animals were once wild and beautiful, and then they were destroyed and abject. Now, as art, they are revived as something new, an aesthetic experience that encourages us to contemplate the effect of our colonization of nature.
Carri J. McKinnon: Illuminated Spaces
Carri McKinnon is inspired by the emotional pull and visual poetry of forgotten places. High contrast imagery and the patterns created by prairie sunlight and shadows create stark spaces which draw her in. McKinnon says, “When bright sunlight steals into an abandoned structure, that ‘dark corner’ is illuminated; the transformation fascinates me. The sunlight, impartial to the ‘quality’ of what is in its path, bathes the space, causing it to become something new. My work is meant to invite the viewer in. Silvery light draws the viewer in to the spaces I have discovered/ created.”
Both of these exhibitions are sponsored by the Battlefords Allied Arts Council and touring through the Organization of Saskatchewan Allied Arts Councils.

Abstractionism through the Lens ……. February 3 – 28th

Works from the North Battleford Photography Club
Abstraction is a departure from accurate representation which can be only slight, or it can be partial, or it can be complete. Abstraction exists along a continuum. Even art that aims for verisimilitude of the highest degree can be said to be abstract, at least theoretically, since perfect representation is likely to be exceedingly elusive. Artwork which takes liberties, altering for instance color and form in ways that are conspicuous, can be said to be partially abstract. Total
abstraction bears no trace of any reference to anything recognizable.

Call for Artists
In 2010, Dimensions will be replaced for one year by a new, three province exhibition called Prairie Excellence. This exhibition will contain work from 12 craft artists from each of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. It is being organized as a collaborative effort by these three Craft Councils. Obtain your brochure at http://www.saskcraftcouncil.org/docs/PrairieExcellence.pdf
The Saskatchewan Craft Council and Traditions Handcraft Gallery is challenging the imagination and creativity of craft people with a bi-functional craft contest and exhibition. We are looking for innovative pieces of craft that serve at least two separate and distinct functions. Entries should be delivered to the Traditions Handcraft Gallery (2714 - 13th Avenue, Regina) or the SCC Gallery(813 Broadway Avenue, Saskatoon) by Friday, March 12, 2010. Entries or digital images of entries that arrive before the deadline may receive extra publicity as part of a “build-up” for the completion. Collaborative entries are welcomed.
Flick Fest 9 May 13 at the North Battleford Public Library
We are looking for original VHS/DVD videos of a maximum length of 15 minutes. All individuals residing in the Lakeland Library Region are eligible to enter in four categories; drama, documentary, animation, or experimental. Deadline for submissions is April 22. The Urban Design Section of the City of Saskatoon invites any artist to submit an application for sculptures. Applications may be submitted for either a completed work in the artist’s possession or for proposed new work. For information package and Application Form in Acrobat PDF format go to www.sasktoon.ca and search under U for Urban Design. Contact Genevieve Russell, Urban Design Section 975-2620. The gallery will have printed version available to gallery members.
Artist in Residence Mentorship Program
Please check out the gallery web site for the photographs taken by Chris Hodge from the open house held at the studio space for the mentorship program. Terry Billings is teaching some exceptional classes this year starting with Learning to See and Draw Realistically which had 10 individuals for the first session. There are still a few spaces left in the acrylic painting class for those wishing to start the joy of working on canvas.
Quick Notes
I look forward to the outstanding artwork and postcards at our first Valentines Day exhibition. The ambulatory gallery which I now call the window gallery has been a great place to sit with a cup of coffee and enjoy the variety of works on display. Mark your calendars for October 22 – 24 when the Organization of Saskatchewan Allied Arts Councils will be holding their annual Showcase of the Stars in North Battleford hosted by the Battlefords Allied Arts Council at the Don Ross Centre. This event allows the general public to view, at a nominal charge, performances that are lobbying to tour the province. This March the gallery again will be hosting the annual Bonaventure art auction and dinner. This fund raising event is special to everyone because of the creation of an endowment fund in memory of the well respected and talented artist Hazel Asmussen. This fund will be there to assist young artists and more information will be available at the art auction. The gallery extends condolences to the families and friends of artist, Stan Wychopin, who passed away recently.
