Creative Partnership Program, formerly artist in residence program

The Chapel Gallery is undertaking a new and unique alternative to the creation of an artist in residence program; this residency will be a first of its kind in Saskatchewan. The resident artist will be employed to work with up to eight regional artists in a mentorship capacity, with the intent that the artists will work together on individual career development and community development initiatives.
The first year will lay the foundation for the second year as well as an active vibrant and thriving arts community for years to come

October News

The artist in residence, Terry Billings and five artists in the mentorship program visited Oriol Dancer’s labyrinth located between Glaslyn and Meadow Lake.  Labyrinths have existed as symbols in virtually every period of history and in most cultural communities.  Their loops within quadrants represent the seasons and the geometry corresponds with lunar and solar cycles.  Unlike a maze, a labyrinth path takes you to the centre and back with no dead ends and its purpose is to relax and invigorate your mind and body form the inside out as well as from the outside in.  Some say walking a labyrinth becomes a metaphor for their lives – those who rush to the centre and back out may realize they tend to rush through life where others find themselves focusing on or solving a problem.  No matter what the purpose each individual may have, the labyrinths are beautiful earth sculptures that are as pleasing to the eye as they may be to the soul.

October 18th the group attended a workshop in Saskatoon, details as follows:

Working with Publishers and Designers

Duncan Campbell, Art Coordinator of Canadian Plains Research Centre and freelance book designer will instruct artists on what to expect in the world of commercial publishing and discuss how to navigate through the murky waters of the commercial use of your artwork in magazines, book covers, marketing and other printed materials.  The workshop will discuss ways of promoting your work to publishers and ways of preparing and presenting your work for various types of publications.

The March 15th Open House was a great success.

We greatly appreciate the support of the community in all our endeavours.

AIR Terry Billings conducted painting and drawing workshops at Chapel Gallery during the month, assisted by member Chris Hodge

Holly Hildebrand continued her term as artist-in-residence for the school board in Cutknife.

AIR Terry Billings will be conducting more workshops in painting and drawing this month at the Chapel Gallery.

Group member Chris Hodge will be part of a two-person show at the SCYAP gallery in Saskatoon, a group show at Willow Tree Gallery, also in Saskatoon, and

contributing sculpture to the annual Prairie Sculptor Show at Innovation Place in the University of Saskatchewan.

May

The group wishes to thank Paul Constable, Saskatoon artist, for allowing us to tour his new studio. Paul made an excellent presentation of his facilities as well as discussing the pieces for his upcoming show at Rouge Gallery and provided a great lunch for the artists. We are also grateful to the George Street group for allowing us to tour their facilities and have a look at some wonderful examples of Saskatoon art.

While in Saskatoon we made a tour of the university art galleries with our creative partner Terry Billings and had a look at the Mendel shows.

We are going to continue our model sessions every two weeks and are planning to conduct a workshop on translucent painting for gallery members in preparation for a member show in the Chapel Window Gallery next year. Later this month we will be attending a local CARFAC workshop on contracts for artists.

Friday the 21st of this month we will be participating in a PoWow in North Battleford, displaying our work and presenting our Art Bus, courtesy of Karlie King. July of this year we will be taking the bus to Oriol Dancer's studio as part of the annual studio tour and to the St. Walburg Blueberry Festival. St. Walburg has also kindly consented to let us use their tourist building for a show of our work during the festival.

Our third Open House will be conducted monday, June 14th and we hope it will be as successful as our previous efforts due to the excellent support from our local art lovers.

An art bus video from the powow is posted on youtube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pKCOfsHzvpE

June

Welcome to our Third Open House at City Hall

Monday, June 14th.

Audrey visiting with admirers
Chris starting the community painting

A successful open house was held again on Monday June 14 from noon to 7 p.m. The group then had a meeting with the new Director of Galleries, Marcus Miller, Dean Bauche, the galleries advisory committee, and Peter Sametz. Associate Executive Director from the Saskatchewan Arts Board. Application for program funding has been submitted for year two.

July was a slow month for the group but the Art Bus was driven to Oriole Dancer's Studio as part of a Studio Tour in the Birch Lake area and preparations begun for the August Blueberry Festival show and our booth at Bridgefest the same month.

August was busy again with a successful show during the week of the Blueberry Festival at the Chuckwagon Museum of St. Walburg. The Art Bus was parked at North Battleford's Bridgefest event that same weekend and ably manned by Holly Hildebrand with help from several group members. A meeting with the Gallery Advisory Committe mid-month confirmed our funding for the second year of the program. The group is preparing for an October open house in our city hall studio and other exciting community events in the coming year.

Holly Hildebrand and Audrey Fineday will be making the City Hall studio available Friday September 24th from 1pm to 7pm as a part of Culture Days. They will be offering interactive artwork, refreshments and of course a display of our group artwork. Click on the link below to access the Culture Days website and a write-up on local events.

Terry Billings, our group mentor, will be offering a workshop in 3D Design this month assisted by group members Chris Hodge and Karen Kowalski.

Holly Hildebrand is preparing her work for her upcoming OSAC tour. An internationally well-known artist and writer, Lynne Perrella, http://www.lkperrella.com/, will be writing the foreword for her exhibition catalog.

The group met with Carol Greyeys, an OSAC representative , to discuss the first year of the program and, with the program being a pilot project, to make recommendations for future Creative Partnership projects.

October

The open house went well and we thank all the members of the public who continue to support our efforts.

The group met to try out techniques and materials in preparation for a 'Transmitting Light' workshop during the Chapel Gallery winter retreat. We will be demonstrating ways of using the wonderful light of the Window Salon with the intention of having a show July of 2011 involving the gallery membership.

We discussed the possibility of creating an online survey of local artists, allowing them to have input into the possibility of a city art centre as the old city pool becomes available in 2012 due to the building of a new facility.

City hall was contacted to determine the possibility of putting a store-front gallery in one of the unused downtown buildings. Unfortunately the city doesn't own the buildings so further effort will be required to find the owners and propose an exhibition of group work in their windows.

Members of the group are submitting artist statements, pictures of themselves, their work and bios as the Chapel Gallery is creating leader boards which can be used in work areas, open houses and other presentations.

November / December

Preparations have begun for a group show in December of 2011 at the Chapel Gallery. Creative Partner Terry Billings will be showing the group how to create a presentation as she works towards her exhibition "Flash" at the gallery in February of 2011.

The online survey for local artists is available at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/ZVVXBLL. Copies of the survey are being sent to artist members of the gallery the first week in January and will be made available at Chapel Gallery.

Group members have submitted an updated report of goals etc to the Creative Partner to provide input for the second year of the program.

Our next Open House will be March 7th from 1-7pm at the city hall studios.

Group members attended the CARFAC workshop " The Business Side of Art " with Grant McConnell at the chapel gallery and plans are being made to attend the Matisse show at the Art Gallery of Alberta in the new year.

We are all looking forward to meeting the public at the "Transmitting Light" workshop during the March Winter Retreat at chapel gallery.

January / February 2011

Creative Partner Terry Billings exhibited her "Flash" multi-media show at the Chapel Gallery for the month of February.

Group member Chris Hodge attended the Matisse show at the Art Gallery of Alberta together with members of the North Battleford Art Club.

The group prepared for the "Transmitting Light" workshop at the Chapel Gallery Winter Retreat. This will give gallery members ideas for a future show using the windows of the Window Salon.

The Community Survey was completed and is in the process of being compiled with copies being given to participants who requested them.

March 2011

Group members Holly Hildebrand, Karen Kowalski and Chris Hodge introduced gallery members to several ways of using window light including translucent fabric, plexiglass, glass and pointillist dots on paper.

Joel Carignan entertained winter retreat participants with his band sunday after 4pm.

Sherron Burns met with the group and gave us excellent information on how to work with the local school system.

The Community Survey has been compiled and will be made available online shortly.

April 2011

The group will be meeting April 11th to discuss a "Christmas Light Project" for the downtown North Battleford area. Representatives from the Chapel Gallery, City of North Battleford and the Local School Board will be present.

Another 'Transmitting Light Workshop' will be presented April 16th to help gallery members with ideas for a July show in the Window Salon.

May 2011

There were further discussions with Sherron Burns of the school board concerning the Christmas Light Project.

Joel Carignan conducted an animation workshop with pupils of the Prairie South School Division. The results can be viewed at http://youtu.be/0AxAf2r4LXw.

Oriol Dancer ran a workshop on paper making in the chapel gallery May 7th with emphasis on the upcoming 'Transmitting Light' member show.

Chris Hodge will be meeting with the Boys and Girls club to discuss the creation of a community centre when the old swimming pool becomes available. The results of the community survey suggest that local artists would like to see an art centre as part of the mix.

Terry Fenton, a prominent Saskatchewan artist and writer, will be addressing the group at the studio June 11th on curatorial practices. He will also be available for individual discussions.

Everyone is cordially invited to our next open house in the studio space. Details are below.

June 2011

We thank Terry Fenton for his June 11th talk on Artists Communities and his great advice on our art. Later that night Terry attended the reception for his work at the Chapel Gallery and gave the audience a good background on the show and a discussion afterwards.

July 2011

The 'Transmitting Light" show has been mounted in the window salon of the Chapel Gallery. We appreciate the efforts of all involved. There was an amazing response to the show with all 34 gallery windows being used for artwork. Pictures of the pieces are shown below:

August 2011

Preparations are being made for an Art Salon in September of this year in conjunction with the Canada-wide 'Culture Days' celebrations. Oriol Dancer participated in the 'Big Things' sculpture symposium at the chapel gallery.

The group manned the art van as part of the North Battleford's annual Bridgefest event at Finlayson Island.

September 2011

This month the group ran an Art Salon in the group studio at city hall in conjunction with 'Culture Days'.

We greatly appreciate the excellent response from the public as well as the performers who entertained us.

The group is looking forward to our December show in the Chapel Gallery and hope that our supporters come out and see what we've accomplished over the two year run of the creative partnership program.
