Artist in Residence

The Chapel Gallery is undertaking a new and unique approach to the creation of an artist in residence program; this residency will be a first of its kind in Saskatchewan. The resident artist will be employed to work with up to eight regional artists in a mentorship capacity, with the intent that the artists will work together on individual career development and community development initiatives.
The first year of what we hope will be a two year project will lay the foundation for the second year as well as an active vibrant and thriving arts community for years to come

The artist in residence, Terry Billings and five artists in the mentorship program visited Oriol Dancer’s labyrinth located between Glaslyn and Meadow Lake.  Labyrinths have existed as symbols in virtually every period of history and in most cultural communities.  Their loops within quadrants represent the seasons and the geometry corresponds with lunar and solar cycles.  Unlike a maze, a labyrinth path takes you to the centre and back with no dead ends and its purpose is to relax and invigorate your mind and body form the inside out as well as from the outside in.  Some say walking a labyrinth becomes a metaphor for their lives – those who rush to the centre and back out may realize they tend to rush through life where others find themselves focusing on or solving a problem.  No matter what the purpose each individual may have, the labyrinths are beautiful earth sculptures that are as pleasing to the eye as they may be to the soul.

October 18th the group attended a workshop in Saskatoon, details as follows:

Working with Publishers and Designers

Duncan Campbell, Art Coordinator of Canadian Plains Research Centre and freelance book designer will instruct artists on what to expect in the world of commercial publishing and discuss how to navigate through the murky waters of the commercial use of your artwork in magazines, book covers, marketing and other printed materials.  The workshop will discuss ways of promoting your work to publishers and ways of preparing and presenting your work for various types of publications.
